LinkedIn IPO is Garbage

February 4th, 2011

LinkedIn has filed for an IPO. That attracted some interest, obviously, but it was only due to the fact that it is a social network.

LinkedIn will be the pre-Facebook IPO, something to watch to get an idea for Facebook’s IPO at a later date, just like investors watched Mastercard after it followed Visa into an IPO. While that makes sense, I don’t think it is even worth following by itself.

Who Cares about LinkedIn?

February 3rd, 2011

News Corporation’s (NASDAQ: NWSA) CEO Rupert Murdoch may be old, but he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Just launched, News Corp’s new flagship digital product, I believe, will be a killer hit in the online/tablet news segment. Read more…

Google Vs Facebook: The Value of a Visitor

January 31st, 2011

There’s a lot of talk online and offline about the growth of Facebook, and concerns about its influence on the web and Google’s profits. The concern is that Facebook, now the most popular site in the world, will dominate Google in driving visitors to their new favorite sites. That used to be Google’s job… Read more…

Netflix Loyalists Infuriated Over Blog DVD-By-Mail Announcement

January 19th, 2011

Anyone keeping up with this blog knows that I like Netflix Inc. (NFLX)

Recently they’ve taken the company in a different direction, choosing to move toward a full-streaming model and nearly make obsolete the DVD-by-mail portion of their business. The idea is simple: kill off DVDs, lay off workers and save nearly $1 billion. That is, of course, if they haven’t ticked off too many of their core customers already.

No More DVDs By Mail?

Intel’s 4Q 2010 Earnings Breakdown

January 17th, 2011

I wanted to take a brief moment to address Intel’s (INTC) rockin’ earnings. The company absolutely obliterated expectations, especially for a chipmaker. While computers are very much on the end of “new technology,” everyone has one, so growing in the consumer space is, well, a little bit of a challenge. Read more…

Silver Wheaton’s Business Model: Silver Streaming

January 11th, 2011

There is something to love about great business models. Two companies I love, Amazon and Netflix, have interesting businesses and great corporate executives.

But as for Silver Wheaton, I think I’m just in love with the execution of a high-risk, high-reward business that requires no physical effort. Read more…

The Case for An Human Organ Futures Market

January 10th, 2011

There seems to be a surge of new ethical concerns in medicine that I have either turned a blind eye to, or that have only recently become popular and that I have not noticed. These new ethical issues tend to center around the pressing political issue of what is the best way to distribute medical care?

Should we distribute medical care via the price system, where the highest bidder gets the care?

OR

Should we instead divvy up limited resources by qualitative measures, where the person deemed “most deserving” receives care before others. Read more…

Credit/Debit Cards to be Tracked Starting in 2011

December 16th, 2010

I’m writing this article because 1) this has caused quite an uproar in internet circles, 2) a related issue, the changes to the 1099 form, remains the most popular post on this blog for months in a row. Hmm. Clearly, there are some people interested in who has access to their credit and debit card data. Read more…

FCC’s Do Not Track = Deathblow to Online Media

December 6th, 2010

The FCC is considering new steps to protect internet users, allowing them to opt out of what some have called invasive tracking measures used by websites to track the behavior of their visitors. The debate is nearly a decade old, but was most recently spotlighted during Facebook’s summer of privacy complaints. Read more…

If Private Equity Ran the World’s Businesses

On the day that several deals are being done including a $5.3 billion move by one of the biggest private equity firms, KKR, it’s probably about time I show my appreciation for the world of private markets. Read more…

October 4th, 2010

The Forbes 400 list is interesting as it shines a light into how the richest people in the world became, well, the richest people in the world. This post will serve as my observations about the list, and the people that make it up. Read more…

Weather and Business

September 9th, 2010

Some say that stock picking is nothing more than a random walk down Wall Street, that investors are better off throwing darts than picking individual stocks themselves. Some have even written a book on the subject. ;) For some securities, they may just be right. Read more…

The Future of Tech: Free Hardware, Expensive Content and Software

June 23rd, 2010

Razor blade manufaturers and computer printer companies do quite well with a model that gives cheap hardware for expensive mantience later. But can tech companies afford to do the same? Should they subsidize hardware to maximize software sales? Read more…
