Earth Day 2006
April 21st, 2007
Last Tuesday Home Depot announced that they will be offering more environmentally friendly products. These 2,500 products will range from all-natural insect repellents to front-load washing machines. The items will be tagged Eco Options so that they are easier to find. Home Depot feels the need to educate their consumers how their shopping habits can be Earth friendly without making any other difference.
There are other stores who are starting to be more environmentally friendly, including:
- Wal-Mart has an environmental friendly initiative under way wherein they favor those suppliers who restrict carbon emissions and embrace sustainability.
- Target is a certified organic produce retailer, offering over 500 choices of organic certified food. They also try to reduce their waste by donating food to programs that will help those who are living in poverty. Last year alone, they gave away 7 million pounds of food. There are also 4 buildings in California that are already ran off of solar energy and there will be 18 there by the end of the year.
- Timberland has Green Index tags on numerous products, which rate products based on environmental issues. They are also investing more money in solar panels and wind turbines.
- Lowe’s offers organic gardening supplies which include fertilizer, soil and insecticides. They have also opened an environmentally friendly store in Austin, Texas last year and plan to open 1 this year in Toronto. These stores have such things as bamboo flooring and blinds and low-flush toilets.
While there are still a lot of stores that need to get involved, we also need to get involved whenever we are purchasing stock. It is time we start thinking about using environmentally friendly options and using our money to support those options.
